The untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born.

In the wake of the Holocaust, dozens of survivors journeyed to Minnesota to establish new lives for themselves. While they couldn’t escape their pasts, survivors in Minnesota incorporated themselves into communities across the state in meaningful and profound ways. What began as an effort to catalog the stories of survivors in the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives and Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies collections has grown into an interactive project uplifting the experiences of survivors who found a new home in Minnesota. Join us as we celebrate this story of resilience in the aftermath of the Shoah and a conversation about how we can continue documenting this story.
The Upper Midwest Jewish Archives at the University of Minnesota Libraries collects and makes available materials documenting the lives of Jewish communities in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin.
